Properties and relationships

In lesson five, students begin work with number lines that show whole numbers and fractions.

The process is:

  • Say, ‘The number line shows a number for each whole unit. Below each number, you’re going to write the fraction that equals the number.’
  • Say, ‘Write the fraction below the whole number 1, that fraction will equal 1’, and scan.
  • Ask, ‘Everybody, what’s the fraction for 1?’ and signal.
  • Continue the process for the next two fractions and then have students write the fractions for A and B. Students check their work for A and B.
  • Say, ‘The next number line shows a different number of parts in each unit. Write the fraction for each whole number. Then write the fraction for each letter. Pencils down when you’re finished.’
  • Observe students and give feedback. Direct and check student work.
