An Instructional Approach

As explained in Lesson 01, effective teaching lessons that use either Direct Instruction (Engelmann, 1980) or Explicit Instruction (Archer & Hughes, 2011) have a three-part structure.

Engelmann’s Direct Instruction calls this “Model, Lead, Test,” while Archer and Hughes’ Explicit Instruction calls this “I do it. We do it. You do it” or “I Do, We Do, You Do.”

Either way, teachers start by delivering instruction (Model or I do). Then teachers lead students through the skill with guidance and feedback (Lead or We do). Finally, the students perform the task on their own (Test or You do).
