The Instruction Coach Observes a Teacher and Holds a Coaching Session
Instruction coach, Ben, is scheduled to observe teacher, Michael, who is teaching a Year 6 science class. During the lesson, Ben assesses the quality, efficiency and precision of Michael’s instruction. Ben is specifically observing and scoring class set up, presentation skills, how corrections are conducted, routines and specific praise. He is also looking to see if Michael is implementing what he has learned during professional learning. Ben completes the Techniques Observation Form and arranges an appropriate time to provide feedback. He begins with what worked well, identifies areas for improvement and provides improvement activities for Michael to implement. Ben then arranges a time to conduct a follow-up observation to evaluate the efficacy of the improvement actions.
