A Teacher Feels Supported by the Instruction Coach

During a feedback session after a classroom observation, teacher Jessica’s instruction coach identified that learning time is being lost because she does not consistently use routines when her students transition from one group to another or between activities. As a result, Jessica often does not finish lessons in standard time.

Jessica’s instruction coach spoke to her about how to establish routines for transitions and how to teach them to her students and practise them. The instruction coach and Jessica agreed an improvement plan with actions for her to take, including professional learning, and scheduled a follow-up observation. Jessica implemented the improvement actions and found that she was able to finish all activities in the lesson. Jessica’s confidence grew as she was able to see how having a simple routine affected her students positively. Her progress was affirmed by her instruction coach after her follow-up observation.
