Test to Measure Student Progress

Direct Instruction (DI) programs have in-program tests to measure if students are progressing acceptably. These tests also provide the teacher with feedback about the effectiveness of their teaching.

In-program tests are called mastery tests; they usually occur every five or ten lessons. These include oral tasks administered to individual students or written tasks administered to the whole class for an entire lesson.

Most of the mastery tests cover material taught to the students in the past ten lessons.

Reading programs, in addition to having mastery tests, have reading checkouts, which are used to check students’ accuracy and fluency.

The teacher records the results from these assessments on in-program forms. The teacher and teaching assistant then share the forms with the school instruction coach.
