Routines in Action

Routines are an important part of an efficient classroom in which:

  • lessons run to schedule
  • learning time is maximised
  • students are focused on learning without unnecessary distractions.

Clear routines and expectations create a familiar and structured environment where students can predict outcomes, move safely and efficiently, and engage in positive behaviours both socially and academically.

Routines include built-in behaviour management strategies, positive learning practices, motivational practices, activity transitions, social and collaborative practices, and repeated weekly timetabling. The STAR rules, which you learned about in the last activity, is example of how a teacher can structure behaviour routines and expectations.

As students understand the expectations regarding behaviour, they are empowered to take control of the personal learning behaviours that will lead to their success.
