The Teacher Uses Data to Make Informed Decisions to Respond to Student Learning

The teacher, Louise, marks student responses while teaching a reading lesson. She use the data to decide if students should go on to the next lesson or repeat parts of the lesson to firm up skills. The first exercise was to review reading long and short vowel words. There were ten items and students made two errors. Louise marks this exercise as eighty per cent first-time correct. Louise will reteach long and short vowel words tomorrow because students were at eighty per cent and part of the criteria for review exercises is to be at least ninety per cent correct.
The next exercise was a new exercise. Students spelled words and then read them. There were twelve items and students made three errors. Louise marks this exercise as seventy-five per cent first-time correct. Louise notes that students do not need firming on this new exercise as they were above seventy per cent first-time correct.
