The Teacher does not Use a System to Check for Mastery

The Teacher does not Use a System to Check for Mastery
The teacher, Damon, is teaching Year 1 students. Students are making errors on review of sounds. Damon is correcting errors, but he is not using a system to check for mastery. After the sound identification exercise, he comments, ‘Most of the group knew those sounds’.
Students move on to a vocabulary page of words containing those same sounds. Students make errors on several words. Damon does not mark in his teacher presentation book which words were missed. Damon gives individual turns, and two of his five students make errors. He does not note each error on a list of pre-printed student names.
Students get out their reading books and open to today’s story. Students make errors as they take turns reading. The errors are often the same words they missed in the vocabulary exercise. Damon does not mark these errors in his teacher presentation book. Damon finishes the lesson and tells students to get ready for a fluency checkout on today’s story. Damon is surprised when three of his five students are over time and have errors on the checkout.
