The Teacher is Unable to Use Data to Make Informed Decisions to Respond to Student Learning
Teacher, Amanda, is teaching a language arts lesson to twelve Year 5 students. She notices that students are struggling but does not note responses during the lessons. She corrects errors as students make them.
At the end of the lesson, she feels she should repeat some parts but can’t remember exactly where students made errors. The next day, Amanda gives a mastery test to her students. Forty per cent of the group did not pass. Amanda decides to move the group back five lessons.
Amanda repeats the lessons but when she gives the mastery test again, she gets similar results from her group. Without noting responses throughout the lesson, Amanda does not have precise information about what students know and what they do not to help her make informed teaching decisions.
