Poor Behaviour is More Likely to Occur

When Expectations are Unclear, Poor Behaviour is More Likely to Occur

Teacher Isabelle is teaching a reading lesson. She has finished instructing the group she was working with and asks her students to move to the next group. Students move slowly to the next group, while pushing each other and talking loudly. When they find their group for the next activity, they continue talking and annoying one another. Isabelle waits silently for them to be quiet, face the front and be ready to learn. When she asks questions, her students do not respond on signal, they call out answers, make comments about other students’ contributions and do not listen. Isabelle spends most of the time allocated to the activity managing students’ behaviour.
