Using Individual Turns Empowers Students to Show Their Learning and Gain Confidence

How Individual Turns Empower Students to Show Their Learning and Gain Confidence

Individual turns mean that there is no support from the group and so provides information about the skill level of individual students. When teachers use individual turns effectively, students show they have mastered the content. This builds self-confidence in their learning capabilities.

How it Works

Individual turns are presented only after the group is firm. Students must perform the exercises confidently and reliably as a group before the individual turns technique is provided.

To provide individual turns, the teacher gives an instruction to all students, then places an individual student’s name at the end of the instruction.

In this way, all students are prepared to answer the teacher until a specific student’s name is called. When a student answers correctly, the teacher affirms or uses a specific positive praise statement that reinforces the student and their learning.
