Number families
Number families work begins at lesson one and continues throughout the program.
Number families are an organisational tool students use for fact memorisation and for solving story problems. Each family shows three related values.
Students begin by saying all four equations for families and then write the equations.
The process is:
- The teacher says, ‘You’re going to write two addition facts and two subtraction facts for each number family in part one. Touch family A’ and scans students. ‘What is the small number in family A?’ and signals (auditory).
- The teacher says, ‘What’s the big number?’ and signals (auditory).
- The teacher says, ‘If you start with seventeen, do you say an addition fact or a subtraction fact?’ and signals (auditory).
- The teacher says, ‘Say the fact that starts with seventeen’ and signals (auditory). ‘Say the fact that starts with four’ and signals (auditory).
- The teacher says, ‘Say the fact that starts with twenty-one and minuses four’ and signals (auditory). ‘Say the other subtraction fact’ and signals (auditory) and repeats until firm.
