Active monitoring

The process for step C is:

  • The teacher says, ‘Write all four facts for family A on the lines below it’ and observes students and gives feedback.

The teacher carefully observes a number of students and gives feedback to individual students and the group.

Basic rules

  • If the task takes no more than thirty seconds, the teacher observes and gives feedback to several students focusing on lower performers.
  • If the task takes considerably more time the teacher moves around the room sampling low, middle and high performers.
  • The teacher makes comments to the whole class. Focusing the comments on students who are following directions, working quickly and working accurately.
  • The students put their pencils down when they are finished with their work.
  • When the teacher observes errors, they do not provide individual help. They point out the error and tell the student to fix the error.
  • If the teacher observes the same error with several students, they stop the students. They point out the error and repeat the part of the exercise that gives the students information about what they are to do.
  • The teacher allows a reasonable amount of time for the students to finish. They do not wait for the slowest students. The teacher provides a countdown as to when the students need to be finished.
