Comparison word problems

Students begin working comparison word problems in lesson eight and continue through lesson nineteen.

They use what they have learned about number families to apply them in figuring out word problems.

The process is:

  • The teacher says, ‘I’ll read problem B. Follow along: The Truck is 218 inches long. The Boat was 126 inches shorter than the truck. How long was the boat? One sentence in the problem tells how many more or less. Raise your hand when you know which sentence,’ and scan students.
  • The teacher says, ‘Read the sentence that tells how many more or less’ and calls on a student.
  • The teacher says, ‘Write the number and two letters in the family for B’ and observes students and give feedback.
  • The teacher says, ‘Check your work. What did you write for the first small number?’ and signals (auditory). ‘What’s the letter for the big number?’ and signals (auditory). ‘What’s the other small number?’ and signals (auditory).

The first letter of truck and boat are underlined to direct students to follow the familiar routine of writing the number and the two letters conveyed by the sentence. Students work the problem and write the answer as a number with a unit name.
