Set Up for Independent Work in Any Lesson

For effective monitoring of written work, especially when teaching the whole class, furniture is arranged so the teacher can walk behind students and look over their shoulders. Usually this means having desks in rows and columns. Alternative arrangements might work in some situations as long as all students can see the board when instruction is underway and not see each other’s work.

Lower performers require close monitoring and feedback so are seated closest to the teacher. Middle performers are seated around low performers. High performers are seated in areas where the teacher may not be able to monitor oral and written responses as frequently as these students are not easily distracted and stay on task.
