Teacher is Unable to Check for Mastery to Inform Teaching Decisions

Teacher Nathan is teaching his English class about conjunctions. He projects a sentence on the board and asks students to identify the conjunction in the sentence. Instead of using the whiteboards, he decides to ask for volunteers to answer the questions.

The students who answered the question were able to identify the conjunction correctly. When students moved onto independent work, Nathan found that a third of class were not firm on what a conjunction was and had difficulty identifying and using them in their own writing. Nathan had to go back and teach the exercise again to ensure that all students were firm in their understanding of conjunctions.
