Assigning and Monitoring Independent Work
Assigning Independent Work
- Follow the instruction provided in your lesson.
- Only use the information provided. Independent work content needs to align to what they learned in the lesson.
- Always teach the lesson first and then assign independent work as that is how you can ensure students are at mastery.

Checking Work
- Circulate among students to read student work.
- Reinforce correct answers and expectations in independent work by acknowledging correct answers and students meeting expectations.
- Check student work while walking by placing a tick mark next to correct answers.
- Point out incorrect answers by putting a dot in the margin and telling the student it needs fixing.
Teaching
- Do not reteach individuals. Students may not fully participate in group work if they know they will get one-on-one teaching during independent work.
- If three or more students make the same error, stop immediately and reteach the group.
Managing Behaviour
- Manage student behaviour by motivating students using the teacher–student game.
- Reinforce good behaviour four times more frequently than correcting negative behaviour.
- Correct off-task behaviour by providing consequences for students who are not on-task, such as awarding a teacher point.
