Correcting Independent Work

Correcting Independent Work with Workchecks

  • Students take out checking pens, put away pencils and erasers.
  • Individual students take turns reading a question and the answer (or the teacher may do this).
  • Provide visual answers whenever appropriate.
  • Move at a quick pace that students can keep up with.
  • Students mark incorrect items with an ‘x’ and correct items with a tick.
  • After all items are marked, students fix up any items they missed with their checking pen.
  • It is acceptable to conduct the workcheck from the previous day at the beginning of the next scheduled class.
  • The workchecks and fixups must be done before beginning the next lesson.
  • Provide additional verbal or written delayed tests on commonly missed items.
  • The Teacher Presentation Book or Teaching Guide tells whether to do workchecks or teacher checks.
  • Workchecks allow students to get immediate feedback, which leads them to be more diligent.
  • Students who correct their own work can ask questions to clarify misunderstandings.
