Correcting Identity Statements

In Reading Mastery Signature Edition, Language Arts, Grade K, students are asked to identify objects and make statements about the objects without the teacher providing a model response first.

The process is:

The teacher says, ‘We’re going to talk about these things. When I touch something, you tell me about it.’ ‘What is this?’ ‘Say the whole thing.’

Students must make the responses indicated in the exercise. They must respond at a normal speaking rate without droning (long, drawn-out words) or shouting.

Correction

The most common error in identity statement formats is students responding with the whole statement when asked, ‘What is this?’ The error is corrected using model, test.
