RMSE-LA 5 subject-verb agreement and two-word adjectives
ddewell@goodtogreatschools.org.au August 7, 2023

RMSE-LA 5 subject-verb agreement and
two-word adjectives
Subject-verb agreement
Students identify the nouns in subjects that have more that one noun in lesson 108. In lesson 109 students learn to identify the main noun of the subject. Students learn that the main noun determines whether the verb refers to one or more than one in lesson 112.
They learn how to test sentences for the appropriate verb: say the sentence with a short subject that tells the verb for the sentence with the full subject.
Two-word adjectives
In lesson 111 students are introduced to two-word adjectives. The type of two-word adjectives introduced have an -ed ending on the second word.
The test of whether two adjectives should be joined into a single adjective is a test of meaning. For the phrase, a short tailed dog, the test is: does the description say that the dog was short? No. Does it say that the dog was tailed? No. Therefore, the words short-tailed are a single adjective and are written with a hyphen between them.
In lesson 121 students construct two-word adjectives that end in -ing.
In lesson 122 students construct two-word adjectives that have no endings.
Adverbs
Adverbs are introduced in lesson eighty-six. Students learn that adverbs are words that usually tell more about verbs. They tell how, when or where an action is done.
Prepositions are introduced in lesson eighty-eight. Students learn that prepositions typically tell about position, such as about, after and around.
