Coaching Data-Driven Improvement in

the Classroom

The instruction coach supports data-driven improvement in the classroom through the cycle of Classroom Data Review.

Classroom Data Reviews are how teachers and teaching assistants understand their students’ mastery and progress so they can place them for instruction, target remediation support for them and accelerate their learning.

With the teaching team, the instruction coach uses the Weekly Data Review Report to identify ways to improve student results. The data they focus on is what lessons were taught to each class, what progress and mastery were achieved, and if there are issues that require remediation.

1. Introduction

When creating the Weekly Data Review Report, the instruction coach Ada notes a classroom is not achieving their lesson progress target in maths. She holds a coaching conversation with the teacher called Mackenzie to analyse and discuss effectively and efficiently teaching maths lessons.

2. Review

During the conversation, Ada provides feedback to Mackenzie using data extracted from the Weekly Data Review Report and previously completed Techniques Observation Forms.

3. Resolve

Based on the data, Ada recommends that Mackenzie collaborates with a teacher whose class data indicates mastery in maths instruction. Ada schedules the Lesson Practice for the teachers that week and notes these recommended coaching actions in the Weekly Data Review Report.

4. Reinspire

Ada continues to monitor the class progress in maths each week to review the Mackenzie’s implementation of the techniques from the Lesson Practice. When reviewing the lesson progress, Ada that Mackenzie is now achieving the targeted progress. Ada acknowledges the teaching team’s collaboration and shares their success with other staff in that week’s staff meeting.
