Coaching Data-Driven Improvement in

the School

The instruction coach supports data-driven improvement in the school through the cycle of School Data Review.

Each year, the principal and instruction coach develop the School Improvement Plan to set out:

  • programs to be delivered in response to student needs
  • expected progress towards achievement standards
  • improvement actions for each team
  • completion timelines.

With the principal, the instruction coach monitors the School Improvement Plan and conducts regular School Data Reviews to assess progress and impact on student achievement standards. The instruction coach facilitates these School Data Reviews.

1. Introduction 

During the weekly School Data Review, the instruction coach James identifies some classrooms have attendance levels regularly below ninety per cent. He schedules a meeting with the relevant teachers to discuss how to improve their attendance. James invites teachers leading classrooms achieving 100 per cent attendance to join too.

2. Review

During the meeting, James outlines how to implement an
effective attendance strategy. He articulates the goal of 100 per cent attendance, why it’s important and its impact if achieved. He discusses the barriers to perfect attendance and recommends a strategy to
address the poor attendees.

3. Resolve

The teaching team openly discusses the practices to improve attendance levels in their classrooms. All teachers struggling with attendance agree to complete the Implement Attendance Strategy module that week.

4. Re-inspire

James notes to monitor attendance levels in classrooms with
poor attendees the following week to review the teachers’ implementation of the attendance strategy. When reviewing the attendance data, James notes that some classrooms have mastered the strategy while others continue to struggle with absenteeism. He provides ongoing support to the teachers struggling with attendance, until they achieve the target per cent.
