Instruction Coaches’ Participation in

MTP Assessments

Instruction coaches play a vital role in the mastery assessments. Mastery assessments are on-the-job assessments that require the observation of a teacher or teaching assistant demonstrating skills, techniques and knowledge learned in the MTP modules.

Experienced coaches receive training to score mastery assessments. Once an instruction coach receives training in completing mastery assessments and has passed the mastery assessment, they will complete mastery assessments independently.

Tilly is an experienced instruction coach who has received training in assessing mastery assessments. She has been coaching all the teachers and teaching assistants in her school on the effective teaching techniques that they will need to demonstrate for their mastery assessment. Many of the teachers are ready to complete their mastery assessment. Tilly sets up a time to conduct each assessment while the teacher is teaching a lesson. While she observes the lesson delivery, Tilly marks the Mastery Assessment Scoresheet on the areas the teacher is or is not demonstrating mastery. After the observation is completed Tilly writes up her feedback and meets with the teacher to show them the areas in which they passed, were not observed on or still need to work on.
