The Instruction Coach Supports

Improvement

The instruction coach provides professional technical coaching and support to the teaching team to ensure effective teaching is delivered in every classroom. This is their job in the school. They usually do not have their own classroom or student groups, but may take classes depending on school needs.

The instruction coach:

  • coordinates school-wide professional learning to ensure the teaching team receives the training and coaching it needs
  • facilitates professional learning for the teaching team and assesses them on their effective teaching so they can use it towards certification and accreditation
  • coordinates practice sessions so that teachers who have mastered practices and techniques can support their less experienced peers
  • monitors outcomes to achievement standards through data reviews to determine improvement patterns that can be replicated and anomalies that need to be resolved
  • conducts classroom observations to ascertain which techniques or practices have been mastered, and coaches the teaching team on their observations, highlighting what worked well and the areas of their practice that require further development
  • analyses data with the principal so that successes can be replicated and anomalies resolved
  • conducts classroom observations, professional conversations and demonstrations
  • helps the principal develop a culture of collegiality among the teaching team, coordinating practice sessions for teachers who have mastered effective teaching techniques to support their less experienced peers.
