The Teacher Responds to Individual
Student Needs
Teacher Elizabeth is teaching Lesson six of the Year 5 Oz-e Science Biology program on adaptations. She activates prior knowledge by recapping what the class learned about natural selection. Elizabeth explains to her students about the types of adaptations and the way interactions between living things lead to adaptations. Following instruction, Elizabeth uses guided practice and a pair-share activity to check for understanding. Students transition to independent work to demonstrate their understanding and apply the knowledge to new contexts. Elizabeth effectively moves through each phase in the lesson using the script in the teacher’s guide. All activities are completed, and students have demonstrated that they have understood the lesson content. At Lesson six, they take a progress text to check for mastery. Elizabeth is confident based on the data collected that her students are on track and making standard growth.
