Increased Student Engagement and
Confidence
Teacher Kira is teaching Lesson three of the Reading Mastery Signature Edition Reading 3 to a Year 3 class. Kira completes activity one with students which involves them reading words the fast way. At the end of the exercise, Kira provides individual turns to check that students are firm and can correctly read the words they will need to successfully read the story in exercise four. Kira again ensures that students are firm before moving students on to independent work. Finally, she completes the work check activity.
What is happening?
Students are fully engaged in every phase of the lesson. Kira uses signals effectively to prompt choral responses in activity one, they are provided with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding during individual turns. Continuous feedback by Kira provides correction where needed and students build confidence in their understanding and ability to apply their learning and complete the independent work. The work check indicates that the students are firm, and Kira can progress to Lesson two in her next timetabled lesson. By completing the lesson in standard time, students build confidence as they work through each phase and are provided with enough practice to master the content.
