Count-on Strategy

Beginning in lesson forty-nine, students use a count-on strategy to figure out the number of objects in a display. They write an addition problem that tells about the objects in two groups.

In lesson fifty-seven, students work with larger numbers.

The process is:

  • Students touch the number for the big circles.
  • They count the small circles and write the number above them.
  • Students write the plus sign between the numbers.
  • They read the problem.
  • Students get the number for the big circles going and then touch and count for the small circles.
  • They write the answer.
