Counting Forward and Backward: Counting by Ones

In CMC B, students learn a variety of counting skills. A key role of counting in the early lessons is to establish the basis for adding and subtracting. Counting by ones is first reviewed, and then established as the basis for adding one.

The process is:

  • In lesson one, students count by ones to ten, twenty and to numbers between ten and twenty.
  • Counting backward is introduced in lesson four. Numbers are shown on a number line. Students start with a larger number and then move backward along the line as they read the numbers.
  • The teacher maintains a slower pace so students who do not know how to count backward can ‘read the numbers.’
  • Individual turns are not specified in this exercise, but individual turns are encouraged if the teacher has any doubt about student performance.
