Maths Learning Behaviours

Students are taught appropriate learning behaviours for CMC and Oz-e-Maths lessons. Students who have not gone through the earlier level of the program may have inappropriate strategies for approaching Maths. Throughout CMC B the teacher gives them precise directions that may be different from what they have learned previously.

During the first lessons:

  • The teacher holds students to a high criterion of performance and reminds them to follow the procedures they are shown.
  • The teacher praises students for following directions and following the solution steps that are taught.
  • Students follow the solution steps that are taught and show their work for all problems. Do not permit shortcuts or working problems with missing steps. Let students know that they are learning ‘real maths strategies’ that will make it easier to do higher maths problems later on.
