Observe students and give feedback

When the direction to ‘observe students and give feedback’ appears in the script, carefully observe a number of students and give feedback to individuals and the group.

The process

The process is:

  • If the task takes no more than thirty seconds, observe and give feedback to several students, focusing on lower performers.
  • If the task takes considerably more time, move around the room sampling low, middle and high performers.
  • Comment to the whole class, focusing on students who are following directions, working quickly and working accurately.
  • Students put their pencils down when they are finished with their work.
  • When errors are observed, do not provide individual help. Point out the error and tell the student to fix it.
  • If the same error occurs with several students, stop the students. Point out the error and repeat the part of the exercise that gives the students information about what they are to do.
  • Allow a reasonable amount of time for students to finish. Do not wait for the slowest students. Provide a countdown for the finishing time.
