Number family computation

Starting in lesson four, students write and figure out problems for families that have a letter.

The process is:

  • The teacher says, ‘Touch family A’ and scans students. ‘Do you add or subtract to find the missing number?’ and signals (auditory).
  • The teacher says, ‘Start with the first small number and say the column problem you’ll write for family A’ and signals (auditory).
  • The teacher says, ‘Touch family A again’ and scans students. ‘Do you add or subtract to find the missing number?’ and signals (auditory).
  • The teacher says, ‘write the column problem in the box below family A. Remember to start the problem with the first small number. Stop when you’ve written the problem for family A’ and observes students and gives feedback.
  • The teacher says, ‘everybody, read the problem you wrote’ and signals (auditory). ‘Work the problem. Then write the missing number in family A’ and observes students and gives feedback.
  • The teacher says, ‘Check your work for family A. Everybody read the problem and the answer’ and signals (auditory).
