Effective transitions

Students go through transitions many times in a school day. They transition into and out of class, from place to place within the classroom, and from group to group and activity to activity.

Transitions that are not effectively managed can take up instructional minutes. Teachers communicate clear expectations so that students move quickly during transitions.

Teachers set times for different parts of the lesson. Using a timer on a phone or mounted on a whiteboard prompts students to move through transitions quickly.
