Steps of individual turns

There is a set of steps for delivering individual turns.

1Announce: ‘Time for individual turns’ is the typical announcement, but teachers can personalise it. For example, teacher calls ‘time to…’ and students respond with ‘shine!’ and wave hands in the air.

2Focus the group: Point to the sound, word, or problem.

3Think time: Allow enough think time. This will vary depending on the difficulty of the task.

4Cue: Ask the question. Call on individual student. ‘What sound, Alexa?’

Teaching tips:

  • Always ask the question first and then call the student’s name. This keeps all students focused as they do not know who will be called upon.
  • Call on students randomly, not in order.
