The Teaching Team and Community Engagement

In the zone of Community Engagement, the teaching team:

  • fosters relationships with parents and the community
  • embeds routines around parents’ commitment to student success
  • invites parents to the classroom through Open Classroom Visits
  • creates and maintains the classroom visit schedule and guidelines
  • holds regular Parent Conversations with parents on student work.

Introduction

Frank (teacher) and Ebony (teaching assistant) set up their Open Classroom Visit guide. In the guide, they include a schedule of times that parents may visit their child’s classroom and information on what the parent can expect during the visit. Frank and Ebony share this guide with their students’ parents in the first week of term.

Review

Later in the term, Frank and Ebony notice a student struggling with attendance. To address the student’s absenteeism, they invite the student’s parent to visit the classroom. The parent agrees to visit the following week to witness their child’s learning.

Resolve

When the parent arrives, Frank greets them and reviews the guidelines for the classroom visit. He suggests that they sit with their child and assist them with their reading. During the visit, Frank and Ebony share examples of the student’s work with the parent to show their child’s progress.

Reinspire

After the visit, Frank steps outside with the parent as Ebony monitors the class. He thanks the parent for visiting the classroom and offers the student’s exemplary work samples to them to take home. Frank addresses the student’s recent absenteeism, highlights the importance of attendance and suggests a home visit later that week to discuss further. The parent agrees.
