The Teaching Team and Peer Collegiality

In the zone of Peer Collegiality, the teaching team:

  • collaborates to improve teaching techniques and practices
  • engages in professional conversations with peers
  • shares learnings between more and less experienced peers
  • collaborates to undertake weekly Lesson Practice
  • observes peer lessons from experienced teachers.

Introduction

The teaching team attend a 30-minute Lesson Practice session each week. To start the session, Roger (instruction coach) provides a five-minute demonstration of the technique to practise this week. The session’s focus this week is leading effective routines and transitions. Roger pairs less experienced teachers with more experienced peers.

Review

During the Lesson Practice, Roger notes that a teacher called Marie is not providing motivating statements when her peers successfully complete a transition. Roger highlights the absence of this part of the routine to Marie. He recommends that she complete a peer observation of a teacher called Jason who has mastered his routines.

Resolve

The principal releases Marie from teaching time the following week. Marie shadows Roger during the classroom observation of her peer’s lesson. She observes Jason’s classroom routines for 15 minutes and records her notes in the Techniques Observation Form.

Reinspire

After the peer lesson observation, Marie and Roger discuss their notes and explore how Marie can implement the technique that week. Marie begins practising the technique in her classroom that day. When Roger observes Marie’s classroom the following week, he notes that she now performs the routine effectively.
