Direct Instruction and Classroom Arrangements

Direct Instruction (DI) is the model for teaching in positive high-expectations schools and includes recommended classroom arrangements for increased academic achievement and lesson delivery.

Lower Levels

Lower levels of DI programs specify that students sit in chairs arranged in a semicircle. The teacher sits at the front so that every student can be observed, including both the group that is receiving instruction as well as other students completing independent work.

Every student in the group is able to see the teacher’s presentation book. The teacher can test this by holding their head next to the book and checking to see the eyes of all students.

Higher Levels

In higher levels of DI programs, students sit in desks or at tables. There is enough space around desks and tables for the teacher to walk around and actively monitor the group. When students are at tables or desks, those needing the most help are seated directly in front of the teacher.
