Other Considerations for Strategic Seating

The teacher uses standard practices for strategic seating as a foundation to create a successful learning environment. However, their knowledge of students, the school, and the community helps them to set up a classroom that promotes expected behaviours.

Therefore, in addition to specific program recommendations, the teacher addresses the unique needs for classroom set-up, taking into account:

  • student needs: age, disability, school experience
  • local culture: norms around personal space and interpersonal interaction
  • community support: family values and expectations.

Tier 2/3 Seating Interventions

Many Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs) for students needing Tier 2/3 supports include interventions for seating arrangement and teacher proximity. The school coach supports classroom teachers and teaching assistants to ensure that they these interventions can be successfully implemented, to increase student success.
