Mastery Defined

Students’ mastery of skills is the key of Direct Instruction.
How students answer the first time is the primary indicator of mastery.

The following criteria are how mastery is measured:

  • Students should be seventy per cent correct on anything introduced for the first time.
  • Students should be at least ninety per cent correct on review material.
  • At the end of the lesson, students should be 100 per cent firm on all tasks.
  • The rate of student errors should allow the teacher time to complete the lesson in the allotted time.
  • Students should be at least eighty-five per cent correct on independent work.
  • Students must have ninety to 100 per cent on mastery tests.
