Opening Your Lesson

Education experts use different terms to describe the basic principles that maximise lesson effectiveness. Anita Archer and Charles Hughes (2011) describe the opening of a lesson as having the following four components:

Gain Students’ Attention

Get the attention of students and communicate the importance of the learning that is about to occur.

State the Goal of the Lesson

Tell the students what it is they are going to learn and why it is important.

Discuss the Relevance of the Target Skill

Tell the students why the skill is relevant and link this to real-world examples.

Review Critical Prerequisite Skills

Review prior learning and check to make sure the students have the prerequisite skills for the new learning.
