STAR Rules

Classroom learning rules set the tone for a positive learning environment. The STAR rules are most commonly used.

S – Sit tall

Feet on the floor, back against the chair, hands in lap.

T – Talk big

Answer in a normal voice, not a yell or a whisper.

A – Answer on signal

When the teacher gives a signal, answer with group.

R – Respect others

We are all here to learn, we all make mistakes sometimes.

The process involves:

  • Teacher posts the STAR rules in the immediate learning area, so they are visible to students during the lesson.
  • Teacher reviews the Star rules with the group every day before starting the lesson and elicits a choral read aloud through them.
  • Teacher reinforces the STAR rules at the beginning of the school year, the start of each term or whenever students need a reminder.
  • At the beginning of the school year, award points frequently for following the STAR rules. As students learn the rules, points become more academically focused.

More information about the effective teaching techniques can be found in the Effective Teaching Guide: How schools can embed great teaching in their classrooms.
