The Body of the Lesson

Ybarra and Hollingsworth (1997) describe the body of a lesson, or the ‘We learn’ part, through the following steps:

Skill Development

– Students work through examples while teachers check for understanding and provide continuous feedback to ensure students are understanding.

Guide practice

– The teacher checks for student mastery through interactive questioning and continuous feedback, using pair-share, whiteboards and choral response.

Throughout the body of the lesson, the teacher is actively monitoring and ensuring that students are engaged and understand what is being taught.

Misconceptions are corrected immediately so that students do not mis-learn important concepts. The goal is for all students to be able to demonstrate that they can complete the skill independently and accurately.
