Music For Learning

Overview

In Year 1 Unit 1, students develop an understanding of the elements of music through listening, exploring, responding, composing and performing activities with a horse theme.

They will focus on music notation through graphic representation, with a focus on rhythmic units ta, titi and za, and the pitch set, s-m-l. 

Students explore a variety of repertoire to build their skills in music literacy while learning to express their own voices and ideas in performing.  

This unit aligns to the Australian Curriculum, Version 9:

  • AC9AMU2E01 – Explore where, why and how people across cultures, communities and/or other contexts experience music.
  • AC9AMU2E02 – Explore examples of music composed and/or performed by First Nations Australians.
  • AC9AMU2D01 – Developing listening skills and skills for singing and playing instruments.
  • AC9AMU2C01 – Select and combine elements of music when composing and practising music for performance.

Learning objectives

  • Remember the things they already know about music.
  • Sing with their best singing voice.
  • Learn that pitch can be high or low.
  • Sing in tune individually and with others.
  • Recognise ta and titi by reading and listening.
  • Notate ta, titi and za.
  • Visually and aurally recognise ta, titi and za.
  • Learn about marching and skipping beats.
  • Perform with a steady beat.
  • Compose their own music.
  • Sing in tune.
  • Notate so, mi and la.
  • Visually and aurally recognise so, mi and la.
  • Experiment using a digital music program.

Assessment

One summative assessment in Week 8 consisting of:

  • Aural identification of rhythmic units.
  • Aural identification of so, mi, la.
  • Singing in tune and in time.
