Placement Test Overview

The school’s Instruction Coach oversees the administration of the placement tests for the school. Teachers can administer the placement test under the direction of the Instruction Coach, but it is not recommended for teaching assistants to administer the tests. If a school is new to the program and no Instruction Coach has been assigned, the school’s instructional leadership team is responsible for the placement testing.

Students are tested at the start of an implementation, or when a student is new to the school, or new to the Direct Instruction programs.

The Instruction Coach uses the placement test results to work out the instruction group level in which to place a student so teaching will be directed to their needs (zone of proximal development), and they learn at the correct level.
