Administering the Placement Test

The RMSE-LA K placement test is divided into three parts. Scoring each part as the students respond is essential. The number of parts a student sits for is based on how they score. A student’s score is based on the number of errors made. 

The process is: 

• Before giving the placement test to students, practise giving the placement test to an adult peer.  
• Test each student individually in a quiet place where other students cannot hear. 
• Estimate three to five minutes to test each student. 
• Sit next to or across from the student. 
• Follow the directions exactly as they are written. 
• Teachers do not use signals or correct student response. 
• Record the students’ first response. They do not get additional tries. 
• Accept all reasonable answers, using the suggested answers as guidelines. 
• For administering Part 2, item 15, you will need a pencil with an eraser. For Part 3, items 1 to 4, you will need a big empty glass and a small glass of water. For items 6 to 8, you will need a pencil. 
• When referring to the pictures in Parts 1 and 2, you may point to the pictures in the Picture Book or use the pictures in the text. 
• Record student scores on the placement test scoring sheet. 
• Circle the correct or incorrect responses for each exercise. 
• Circle the entry lesson for each student.
