Lack of Instruction for Students
Students are unaware of what behaviour is expected of them. They do not receive instruction or guidance about the routines and rules for behaviour from one teacher to the next. This increases students’ poor behaviour and interferes with student behavioural and learning success.
The Problem is Compounded
As a result of students not being taught what behaviour is expected,
Students:
- are surprised when behaviours and routines are expected of them
- take no responsibility for self-regulation. They are unaware of what to do when they are struggling.
Teachers:
- fail to review expectations and routines with students at the start of each term
- do not teach routines around using timeout space, ignoring opportunities to teach self-regulation
- inconsistently use non-verbal gestures as a redirection
- inconsistently respond to inappropriate behaviours.
