The Teacher does not Make Informed Decisions About Student Learning

When a teacher does not make informed decisions about student learning, they do not identify which students have mastered content and which students have not. They may make decisions based on faulty data, or on a feeling or assumption. This results in students not getting what they need to move forward, and, for some students, results in them learning skills incorrectly or with errors.

The Problem is Compounded

  • The teacher does not use continuous checks to find out if students have mastered the content before moving on.
  • The teacher does not monitor students throughout the lesson to track students’ understanding, where they are making errors and where additional practice is required to become firm.
  • The teacher cannot attend to student errors and mastery; does not enable them to be efficient in resolving any learning issues that show up during the lesson.
  • The teacher does not ensure that students are firm on each step before going on in the lesson.
  • The teacher does not ensure every student answers correctly and with confidence.
