Students are not Confident, Engaged Learners and do not Have Appropriate Behaviour
Teacher Maddie is a new teacher who teaches multiple groups throughout the day. She is not sure how to get everything done so some groups do the independent work as a group so it can get completed quickly. The students who complete independent work together know they may not be called on; they do not have to show their learning, only copy the answers that someone else says. Other groups are assigned independent work and Maddie uses the time they are working to prep for the next class.

Students are not getting feedback on their answers, praise for their work habits or answers corrected as they work. They are not gaining self-confidence due to the lack of teacher monitoring. Bad behaviours may also be on the rise due to the lack of feedback and monitoring. She does not regularly check independent work. When Maddie does not check it, she is showing students she does not value this part of the lesson; students in turn will not value it and work carelessly. Students do not know if they are truly mastering the content and skills. When mastery tests are given students’ self-confidence could plummet if they do not pass the assessment.
