Teacher Holds Professional Conversation with Instruction Coach

Teacher Clara meets with her instruction coach weekly to help embed techniques and practices with mastery. Instruction coach Max is observing Clara specifically watching how students respond to attention signals. After the lesson is over, Max starts with positive feedback about having attention signals in place and that most of the class appropriately responds.

Max then gives some constructive feedback to Clara regarding having too many different attention signals, which may lead to students not remembering the response to them all. Also, Clara is not using them with fidelity because he noticed when she was running a little behind, she would skip the attention signal all together. Max wants to Clara to practise using one attention signal throughout the day with fidelity.

Clara practises throughout the whole next week. She uses one attention signal, ‘Ready to Rock/Ready to Roll’ and gives verbal praise to students who stop and respond. Her transition times have improved and all students are participating in the attentional signal.
