Teacher Observes Best-Practice Teaching

Teacher Alyssa and instruction coach Kristin discussed previously during a coaching session that Alyssa needs to focus on doing ‘check for understandings’ at the end of each lesson. Alyssa explains that by completing these you will be able to use the data to determine if the lesson needs to be retaught, and to which students.  

Kristin begins to demonstrate the practice by asking the students to take out their whiteboards. She asks the question, ‘Think about the factors of 12. When I signal, write the factors on your whiteboard.’ Kristin signals and the students write. Kristin signals for the students to ‘chin-it’ by touching her finger to her chin. The students respond by placing the whiteboard under their chins. Kristin walks around the room and provides corrective feedback. She was able to determine that the students got 92% accuracy within the group, but also writes down the students who need help with this concept.  

Alyssa discusses with Kristin the observation. She is going to practise the technique over the next two weeks. She plans to keep track of the CYUs by imputing them into the Student Profile Tool.
