Teacher Values Coaching
Teacher Penelope struggles with student motivation. She has a data wall that displays mastery for lessons, but it does not seem to be enough just to give positive praise. She needs something to work in conjunction with the positive praise. She meets with her instruction coach Jason to discuss other ideas to implement in her classroom. He suggests giving out good work tickets to students who master lessons and follow expected behaviours and routines throughout the day. He models a direct instruction lesson and hands out tickets to students who responded correctly to verbal cues and were able to transition from small group to independent work appropriately.
The next day, Penelope hung up a class menu that explicitly shows the prize you get with ‘X’ amount of tickets. She notices her students are excited to earn tickets and are more motivated to behave and learn according to the high expectations she set. Penelope values the feedback given by Jason and was able to apply her newly learned skill into her classroom the very next day.
